Key West Fishing Report for the beginning of April
By Captain Larry Cohen of Key West Flat Fishing

With the air temperatures in the mid 80s day and night and light winds this is a winning combination for great fishing! The tarpon are moving in the channels, Key West Harbor and onto the flats in big numbers. Early morning (sun up) and with the water being flat calm, what a sight when you see these 100 lbs + fish rolling nice and slow. They are taking flies, live bait (blue crabs and pin fish) and plugs. I found a new plug, called a "mangrove stick". Although this plug has been around a long time, I have been using them for a while on sharks and barracudas and now I found, that the tarpon eat them very well. These plugs have very good hooks and split rings, so you don't have to change these like some of the other plugs that are out on the market. These plugs are made by Trader Bay.

This week while we had on a nice tarpon (80 lbs), we had a bull shark come up and bite him in two. It was not a pretty sight, but these things do happen. So needless to say with the tarpon in, so are the big sharks. I have been seeing very large schools of permit to the west of Key West. There are reports of a good number of bonefish being caught, but lately I've not had the chance to do much bone fishing, since most of my clients have "TARPON FEVER". We have not started our night fishing for tarpon yet, but I feel that it's right around the corner. Jumping 15 to 25 fish in four hours time is a sure cure for TARPON FEVER. It looks like the weather should hold for April, so look out for some great early tarpon action. If you have any further questions, please contact me.
